Industrial / Dark Ambient constructed from material gathered using radio wave scanning, data from radio telescopes, and archives of universe research data servers.

Droney shoegaze, expect ominous, bleak atmosphere and fuzzy, ethereal walls of sound.

Dark, experimental trip-hop from Japan. Dhal is one of those mean bands that make one really awesome album and then vanish forever.
48 minutes; 12 tracks.

I would describe Hypothermia’s style [for this album at least] as blackened post-rock, it’s really calm and atmospheric stuff.

MSBR was one of the very best and most under-appreciated Japanese harsh noise acts. His name is Koji. But he has gone to the heaven.. :’( I’m very sad..But he is alive in my mind forever. :)

White Mice are the only noise rock band I’ve heard that truly deserve the ‘noise’ part of the title. Raw, overdriven guitars, sledgehammer drums, and crashing walls of psychedelic noise.

Virgin Mega Whore is a band that I am not quite sure how to categorize. Some of their material is fairly straightforward punk-rock, while other tracks employ crude electronics and have an industrial feel, although still in a decidedly punk context. An unusual combination perhaps, but it works quite well.

Nadja is a drone doom band from Canada that employs a style that is reminiscent of fuzzy shoegaze, in contrast to the ultra-downtuned, dirgelike aesthetic that dominates the drone doom genre. Numbness is a collection of both obscure previously released tracks and new, unreleased work. Numb, the final track, is one of my very favourite tracks of all time.

Bleak, minimal ambient drone / noise. In my opinion this is easily the best of the Boris with Merzbow collaborations, and is sure to please fans of deep, meditative drone.

The Maniacal Vale is a funeral doom metal album that incorporates despairing atmosphere and schizophrenic psychedelia along with the traditional crushing monolithic riffs associated with the genre. Admittedly the vast majority of the fans of the genre have probably already heard this, but in the event that you have even a slight interest in doom metal and haven’t heard this, know that this album is not something you want to miss.

Atrax Morgue was the project of Italian power electronics / death industrial musician Marco Corbelli which was active from 1992 to 2007 when Marco committed suicide. His output is primitive, disturbing, and most definitely not for everyone.

Essential dark ambient listening. Immersive and cinematic ambiance themed around an insane asylum.

“After a half-decade of Captain Ahab destroying crowds in Los Angeles with their anything goes “no electronic genre left behind” style, there is a definitive release to bring the insanity home. High in concept, poor in taste, and drowning in a jrn highschool girl’s dreams, After the Rain My Heart Still Dreams is an epic tale of rebellion. A rebellion completely lacking in nobility and morality about learning to shave your snatch, steal a man, and show off your light-up sneakers.”

Aube is a Japanese musician who takes a minimalist approach to music, using only simple sound sources which he then heavily processes to create vast sonic soundscapes. Cardiac Strain in particular was constructed using only the heartbeat as source material.

とろ美’s (Toromi’s) music is cute, perhaps unethically so. Her music is the sonic equivalent to consuming a mouthful of extra-sweet fruit flavoured candies which are shaped like cute animals, while under the influence of acid.
33 minutes; 9 tracks.

Cakebuilder produces drum and bass influenced breakcore with a horror-influenced feel to it. Decks N Demons belongs in the collection of anyone who is even slightly interested in breakcore.
21 minutes; 4 tracks.

Barn Owl create psychedelic drone that brings images of a bleak, apocalyptic western scene to mind; their music is very reminiscent of Earth’s newer material. The Conjurer is one of my very favourite 2009 releases, if you’re a fan of drone or ambience, do not hesitate to check this out.
41 minutes; 4 tracks.

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble fuses acoustic instrumentation and electrics to create an eclectic combination of jazz, dark ambient, and post-rock. Highly recommended to anyone who likes dark and moody music.

A brilliant example of black metal’s more atmospheric side. This is more about cold, droney soundscapes than it is about killer riffs and blast beats.

Little Prince is as much an electronic album as it is a J-Pop album. There are lots of influences here, a couple tracks even border on breakcore. Even if you despise J-Pop, this album is probably worth downloading due to the final track which is a phenomenal remix by World’s End Girlfriend.
48 minutes; 13 tracks.

アーバンギャルド (Urbangarde) are a self proclaimed ‘post-pop’ group from Tokyo. Their music would be best described as experimental J-Pop; they have a lot more going on musically than just a pretty young girl with a nice voice. Worth checking out even if you don’t normally like J-Pop.
40 minutes; 9 tracks.

mp3 cbr @ 320kbps

A dark, cinematic, and atmospheric album that seamlessly brings together elements from countless genres of electronic music. This debut release is simply a masterpiece and I can’t recommend it enough.
58 minutes; 10 tracks.

mp3 vbr v2

An atmospheric journey through cold orchestral passages and thundering marches so massive and heavy that they shake the earth.
24 minutes; 3 tracks.

mp3 cbr @ 192kbps

Atmospheric yet viscous and relentless, power electronics at its very best. The only negative thing I have to say about this release is that it’s over far too quickly.
11 minutes; 2 tracks.

A brilliant offering. Sometimes haunting, and always beautiful. At the first glance this album may seem to be a mixture of incompatible sounds and technics, but upon repeated listens it becomes apparent that nothing could be as wrong as this claim. This is an involving listen, not to be played as background music; volume up, senses off.

A terrifying collage of sounds, a soundscape for schizophrenia. Listen to in the dark.
73 minutes; 6 tracks.

mp3 cbr @ 192kbps

A bleak soundscape of fuzz and static, like a voyage through an electrical storm. At times calm and soothing, at others dense and harsh. I’ve seen this album near the top of many Best Of 2009 lists, and it isn’t terribly hard to see why.
